Chanel Porchia-Albert is a nationally recognized leader in reproductive and maternal health equity. As Co-Director of JustBirth Space and Founder of Ancient Song, she centers Black and Latinx communities while shaping policy to address racial disparities in maternal care. Chanel has collaborated with Vice President Kamala Harris, NYC Health, and the National Academies, advancing initiatives including Medicaid doula reimbursement, Medicaid Doula Hubs, and the Baby Dove Black Birth Equity Fund. Her work ensures culturally respectful, community-rooted, and empowering care for all birthing people.
Research Interest:
Chanel Porchia-Albert’s research interests focus on advancing maternal and reproductive health equity, particularly in addressing racial and ethnic disparities in maternal outcomes among Black and Latinx communities. Her work emphasizes the development and evaluation of community-based, culturally responsive care models that center the needs and lived experiences of underserved populations. She is deeply engaged in exploring the role of doulas in improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes, as well as advocating for policy reforms such as Medicaid doula reimbursement and the establishment of Medicaid Doula Hubs to expand access to essential support services. Her interests also include examining the impact of structural racism on maternal healthcare systems, promoting patient-centered and respectful care practices and integrating traditional, community-rooted approaches with modern healthcare frameworks. Through a combination of research, advocacy and policy development, she aims to drive sustainable health system changes that ensure equitable, empowering and high-quality care for all birthing individuals.
