Biography:

Dr. Peter Averkiou is an accomplished pediatrician and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Florida Atlantic University. He serves in multiple leadership roles at the medical school, including Co-Director of the Foundations of Medicine courses, Director of Service Learning Projects, Director of the Newborn Nursery Clinical Rotation, and Director of the Synthesis and Transition Course.

With a strong commitment to medical education and clinical excellence, Dr. Averkiou is dedicated to preparing the next generation of physicians through innovative teaching, hands-on clinical training, and community-engaged learning. His work integrates academic leadership with patient-centered care, reflecting his passion for advancing pediatric health and medical education.

Research Interest:

Dr. Peter Averkiou’s research interests center on medical education, pediatric clinical training, and community-engaged learning. He is particularly focused on developing and evaluating innovative teaching methodologies that enhance medical students’ clinical reasoning, patient communication, and professional identity formation. His work also explores the integration of service learning projects into medical curricula to strengthen community health engagement and social accountability in future physicians. In addition, he is interested in improving newborn care practices through evidence-based approaches in the newborn nursery setting, as well as refining transition-to-practice programs that prepare graduates for residency and independent clinical practice.
